Is Maruti Suzuki Alto the people’s car?

Is Maruti Suzuki Alto the people’s car? Stealing the thunder from TATA Nano

Baring Tata Nano’s extra 4 kms per liter, Maruti Suzuki Alto has most parameters of being a truly peoples car. One more area is price, but, price doesn’t seem to be an issue with Indians looking for a small car. Maruti Suzuki Alto is approximately Rs 1 Lakh more than its equivalent TATA Nano model. If one actually has a Nano budget, then wait for the introduction of Maruti Suzuki Cervo, the price gap is going to be narrower. Crevo price tag is estimated to be 1.50 to 2.00 lakhs. it will be in by December or Jan next year.

Maruti Suzuki is not yet ready to give up its small car market leadership. With the introduction of Maruti 800, Maruti Suzuki has been undisputed king of small cars in India. TATA Nano was a challenge to its dominance, but, Nano has failed to live up
Maruti Suzuki Cervoto people’s expectations.

TATA Nano has been plagued with fires and other issues. TATA Motors hates to call its remedial action as a ‘Recall.’ Instead, it has given explanations in a press release that indicates production quality control. Mind you that it is in addition to the production problem as known in the open. TATA Motors have hiked its warranty on Nano, but, Amruti Suzuki Alto dosen’t has to. Alto is more safer than Nano if one looks at the recent history.

We can expect to see a showdown by April 2011 if TATA Motors Nano or Maruti Suzuki Crevo win the ‘people’s car’ title. For now, it is definitely Alto.
