She denied it for years, but now the truth comes out. Bea Arthur was a Marine. She was born in 1922 in New York as Bernice Frankel. Her parents owned a woman's clothing store and she went to an all girl's high school where she'd acted in high school plays. She then went to an all women's college, and in 1943, she joined the U.S. Marine Corps. as a typist and truck driver.

She was one of the first women reservists, as a matter of fact. She stood 5 foot 9 inches tall, had brown hair and eyes, and weighed 158 pounds.

She was known to be argumentative and over-aggressive and her recruitment officer wrote in the record and was “officious—but probably a good worker—if she has her own way!"

She did have one 'misconduct' in her record, which was a case of venereal disease, which kept her out of work for five weeks, and which reduced her pay during that time. She was given an honorable discharge with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

She married a fellow marine, Robert Alan Aurthur, who was also a screenwriter, director and producer, and she took his last name, but changed the spelling to Arthur, and was known as Beatrice Arthur.

After the Marines, she studied acting at New York's The New School, then began acting on stage.

Before her most famous TV roles, she won a Tony for her role in the original Broadway cast of Mame. She divorced Arthur and married Gene Saks. Arthur and Sake adopted two sons during their marriage.

Aaron Spelling wanted her to guest star in All in the Family as the timid Edith Bunker's outspoken feminist cousin, Maude Findlay. Arthur's height, deep voice and personality made her well suited for this role.

She then starred in Maude as Maude Findlay, in the famous spin off TV show, and later in The Golden Girls. She won Emmys for her roles in both TV shows. Bea Arthur also had a sister who looked a lot like her. Upon her death, she bequeathed money to various youth groups.

She also described in a handwritten note in her Marines file, that she had studied lab technique and worked in a lab and in a hospital, but that she didn't like lab work. She took another job, but found she didn't make enough to support herself. She notes that she had dabbled in dramatics in high school. She studied piano and orchestra for 13 years, and sang contralto. She enjoyed hunting with a 22-caliber rifle.

Heisman Trophy winners are not all headed for glory. Cam Newton of Auburn, the runaway favorite for the 2010 Heisman Trophy, has been dogged by a recruitment controversy. Joining him as 2010 Heisman finalists are Kellen Moore of Boise State, Andrew Luck of Stanford, and LaMichael James of Oregon. Past winners of the honor have run an eclectic playbook of highs and lows.

The Heisman Trophy has been awarded to the "most outstanding" college football player since 1935. While Auburn quarterback Cam Newton's 2010 bid for the coveted bronze statue has been dogged by controversy and hype, he's not the first.

Archie Griffin is the only two-time winner. The Ohio State University standout won it in 1974 and 1975.

In 1968 O.J. Simpson ran away with the honor. The USC tailback famously stood trial in 1995 for a double murder – of his wife and her friend. After a "not guilty" verdict in that trial, Simpson was later convicted in 2008 and sent to prison for an armed confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas casino-hotel.

You've heard the advice countless times, if you're flying out of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport call ahead to check on your flight's status. The day is young, and already more than 50 percent of today's flights have been scrubbed, said Patrick Hogan, an airport spokesman.

The airport is doing its best to keep 2 runways open, Hogan said, Crews were plowing all night and into today, but even with that effort arrivals have been limited to 10 to 15 per hour. Normally the airport can handle 60 to 90 inbound flights per hour.

Passengers whose flights are cancelled will have to rebook with their airline, but as to when they will get out is anybody's guess. Airlines can't add any flights, so stranded passengers will have to wait for a flight that has an open seat. With fewer flights these days, "that becomes more difficult," Hogan said.

Holbrooke in Critical Condition Following Surgery

WASHINGTON — Richard C. Holbrooke, the Obama administration’s special representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, is in critical condition at a Washington hospital after emergency surgery to repair a tear in his aorta, the State Department said in a statement on Saturday.

Doctors at George Washington University Hospital completed the surgery on Saturday morning, and Mr. Holbrooke has been joined there by members of his family, according to the statement from the department’s spokesman, Philip J. Crowley. He did not provide further details.

Mr. Holbrooke, a veteran diplomat who helped broker the peace accord that ended the war in Bosnia, became ill on Friday during a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, administration officials said. He was able to walk out of Mrs. Clinton’s office to seek medical attention.

As the senior policy-maker on the administration’s most pressing foreign-policy issue, Mr. Holbrooke, 69, has been a highly-visible presence in Washington over the last two years. He has helped shape the civilian component of the administration’s Afghanistan strategy, deploying more than 1,000 diplomats and aid workers to help the Afghans rebuild its state institutions.

Mr. Holbrooke travels regularly to Afghanistan and Pakistan, conducting often difficult negotiations with President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan and Pakistan’s civilian and military leaders.

Before his current post, Mr. Holbrooke was an investment banker, author and commentator. He has held an array of diplomatic posts, including United States ambassador to the United Nations, ambassador to Germany, and was twice an assistant secretary of state, for East Asia and for Europe.

Mr. Holbrooke began his career in Vietnam, where he worked as a staff assistant to the ambassadors Maxwell Taylor and Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. At the age of 35, he was the youngest person to hold the position of assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.

Boston Red Sox have announced their $142 million

At a news conference Saturday after he signed a $142 million, seven-year contract, Crawford said that when his career is over he hopes he will be mentioned among Red Sox greats such as Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Rice and Manny Ramirez.

The speedy Crawford's signing as a free agent follows Boston's acquisition of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez from San Diego and gives the Red Sox one of the best lineups in the majors. Crawford said he wanted to stay in the AL East and doesn't mind where manager Terry Francona puts him in the lineup.

"Whatever he wants to do with me is fine," Crawford said.

Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who missed most of the 2010 season with rib injuries, likely will lead off once he fully recovers.

"Our best team is when Jacoby's hitting first," Francona said.

Crawford, a four-time All-Star, hit .307 for Tampa Bay this year while setting career highs with 19 homers and 90 RBIs. A four-time stolen base champion, he swiped 47 bases and led the AL with 13 triples.

General manager Theo Epstein called him a "game changer."

Crawford, who won his first Gold Glove award this year, receives a $6 million signing bonus, with $1 million payable within 30 days of approval and the rest in $1 million installments on the first day of five consecutive months starting in May.

He gets salaries of $14 million next season, $19.5 million in 2012, $20 million in 2013, $20.25 million in 2014, $20.5 million in 2015, $20.75 million in 2016 and $21 million in 2017.

Crawford would earn a $50,000 bonus each time he's an All-Star; $100,000 each for Gold Glove, Silver Slugger and World Series MVP; and $75,000 for league championship series MVP. He would get $200,000 for winning the MVP award, $125,000 for second, $100,000 for third, $75,000 for fourth and $50,000 for fifth.

He also receives a limited no-trade provision. Boston designates 28 teams he can be traded to without his consent and Crawford can eliminate two of them.

In 2009, when Tata Nano was given a striking coverage by media, the small car had orders for more than 200,000 Nanos but due to problems like production delays and fire accidents the car sales have gradually come down. While the rival cars like the Maruti Suzuki Alto have overtaken Tata Nano with sales more than 30,000 in November, making it India’s best-selling car last month.

As Tata has been bedeviled with production delays and fires in some Nanos, rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Alto have gained an edge. The Alto, retailing at $6,200 in India, is now the best-selling car there. Though car sales have shot up across India, because of an economy that is growing at nearly 9 percent annually, sales of the Nano have been falling for the last four months. Its maker, Tata Motors, sold only 509 Nanos to its dealers in November — a stark contrast to the 9,000 it delivered in July. Last year, when media coverage and auto writers’ praise were stoking demand, Tata had orders for more than 200,000 Nanos, which has a list price starting at about $2,900.

The Nano’s celebrated rollout had helped prompt other big automakers, like General Motors and Renault-Nissan, to announce plans for ultracheap people’s cars of their own for sale in India and other developing countries. Those would-be competitors are still expected to appear in the next two years. But the Nano’s poor showing could give pause to corporate executives and policy makers, eager to see goods and services sold to people of modest means.

TATA Nano has been plagued with fires and other issues. Mind you that it is in addition to the production problem as known in the open. TATA Motors have hiked its warranty on Nano, but, Amruti Suzuki Alto dosen’t has to. Alto is more safer than Nano if one looks at the recent history.

We can expect to see a showdown by April 2011 if TATA Motors Nano or Maruti Suzuki Crevo win the ‘people’s car’ title. For now, it is definitely Alto.

Those of you wondering how "Thor" would handle the scenes set in Asgard, wonder no more. Near the top of the trailer, viewers are treated to a beautiful shot of the majestic kingdom. It's a vast landscape that gives the equally awe-inspiring Oa from "Green Lantern" a run for its money.

Destroy Everything
Thor has no shortage of foes to battle his way through, not the least of whom is the Destroyer. Effectively an enchanted suit of armor sent by Loki to destroy his half-brother, the Destroyer is bound to live up to its name when "Thor" heads into theaters next year.

Giant Threat
Who are those mysterious creatures that Thor, Sif and the Warriors Three are battling throughout the trailer? Smart money says that they're the Frost Giants, or some other Asgardian creature. Regardless, it's cool to see that "Thor" is fully embracing its fantasy elements.

Mortal Perks
In addition to its mythical setting, "Thor" spends plenty of time on Earth, and the scenes set in New Mexico appear just as riveting as the ones set in Asgard. Plus, if you were looking for definitive proof that Thor and Jane Foster would emerge as a romantic pairing, I think this screenshot more than does the trick!

Sibling Rivalry
Of everyone in Thor's extensive rogues gallery, there's nobody deadlier than his mischievous half-brother Loki. The trickster god is at his worst when manipulating others into doing his bidding, but based on the action scene at the end of the trailer, it looks like he's more than capable of holding his own in a one-on-one match against Thor.

Hem's Worthy
The number one thing we're taking away from this trailer isn't the amazing action sequences, nor is it the special effects. It's Chris Hemsworth himself, the Australian actor responsible for playing the title character. With a relatively small body of work under his belt, Hemsworth was something of an unknown quantity going into "Thor." Now, there's little doubt in our minds that the right man was selected for the job.

Salvia herb, also known as salvia divinorum has been brought to the public eye again as actor/singer Miley Cyrus has been caught on a leaked cell phone video allegedly smoking the herb.

Salvia is considered a hallucinogenic that is readily available and is legally sold on the Internet, tobacco, and head shops. Several states have banned the herb, especially after watching videos of young teens partaking in the inhaled side effects.

Dr. Bryan Roth, a biochemist and neuroscientist at Case Western Reserve University says that salvia’s active ingredient, Salvinorin A, is a strong hallucinogen, “as potent as LSD, and essentially the most potent naturally occurring hallucinogenic drug.”

Studies are being conducted as to the effects of Salvinorin A against Alzheimer’s, dementia and schizophrenia.

Salvia is illegal in 15 states and legal except for human consumption in 4 others. Different states have different laws, including different age restrictions for legal possession.

Major universities, including Harvard, are still researching the ramifications of salvia usage on the brain. It has been proven in studies with lab animals that it is not addictive, but it is advised to stay away from the herb because of the experience deemed as unpleasant.

Sonja Kohn had a 23-year 'criminal relationship' with Bernard Madoff

The trustee overseeing the bankruptcy of Bernard Madoff's investment firm launched a $19.6 billion lawsuit against Austrian banker Sonja Kohn and dozens of related firms on Friday, the largest lawsuit he has launched to date to recover assets for victims of Mr. Madoff's decades-long fraud.

The civil complaint, filed by Irving Picard in federal bankruptcy court in Manhattan, alleges Ms. Kohn, the principal shareholder and former head of Bank Medici AG, had a 23-year "criminal relationship" with Mr. Madoff in which more than $9.1 billion was funneled into his Ponzi scheme. However, Mr. Picard said he is seeking to recover $19.6 billion, or the entire amount of the principal he claims investors lost in Mr. Madoff's scheme.

"The Ponzi scheme could not have continued for as long as it did" if not for Ms. Kohn propping it up, said the lawsuit, which also names relatives and other entities related to her, which Mr. Picard referred to as "the Medici Enterprise."

Friday's lawsuit is the latest filed by Mr. Picard before a Saturday deadline for "clawback" lawsuits aimed at recovering funds lost through the fraud.

"In Sonja Kohn, Madoff found a criminal soul mate, whose greed and dishonest inventiveness equaled his own," Mr. Picard said in a statement. He said he expected to uncover more information about what he called a "criminal" organization through the lawsuit, given "the scope of Madoff's Ponzi scheme, the deceptive nature of the defendants, and the deliberately Byzantine structure of the Medici Enterprise."

Mr. Picard alleged 22 counts of civil racketeering, conspiracy and fraud against Ms. Kohn and others.

Ms. Kohn told The Wall Street Journal last year, "I am actually the greatest Madoff victim. It is a tragedy for my family, my company and for me personally."

Bank Medici surrendered its license in March 2009.

Ms. Kohn allegedly met Mr. Madoff through Cohmad Securities Corp. co-founder Maurice "Sonny" Cohn while she was workingas a retail stock broker at Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York in the mid-1980s, Mr. Picard said. Cohmad is a brokerage firm that operated out of Mr. Madoff's Manhattan office.

Mr. Picard accused Ms. Kohn of feeding billions of dollars through so-called feeder funds in exchange for "secret kickbacks" from Mr. Madoff that totaled at least $62 million. Mr. Madoff allegedly paid her a flat fee, which was usually over $6.5 million a year, and kept it secret from others within his firm, Mr. Picard said.

The payments allegedly were made through a network of sham companies and disguised as a payment for "market research" that was never used by Mr. Madoff under the heading "BLM Special," Mr. Picard said. That was the label, Mr. Picard said, used by Mr. Madoff when making payments from the investment firm "for gifts to family members, forgiven loans to friends, payments of personal expenses and charitable contributions." She was paid both by Mr. Madoff and by investors seeking to invest with Mr. Madoff, Mr. Picard said.

As the scheme fell apart in late 2008, Ms. Kohn allegedly conspired to protect herself and her family, causing one of the funds to withdraw $536 million in the fall of 2008, including $423 million on Nov. 4, 2008, Mr. Picard said in the lawsuit.

Just days before Mr. Madoff was arrested in December 2008, Ms. Kohn directed her husband to withdraw all of their personal assets from any member of the "Medici Enterprise" that had potential exposure, said the lawsuit.

After Mr. Madoff's arrest, Ms. Kohn denied to Austrian authorities that she was close to Mr. Madoff, Mr. Picard said. However, she held herself out to potential investors as Mr. Madoff's close friend and "intimated that their special relationship yielded special returns on investments" with his firm, Mr. Picard said.

In November, Cohmad Securities, Maurice Cohn and his daughter, Marcia, reached a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding their relationship with Mr. Madoff. The SEC accused them of negligence in making statements to potential Madoff investors as well as not keeping accurate books and records. They didn't admit or deny wrongdoing as part of the settlement.

A separate civil lawsuit filed by Mr. Picard last year against Mr. Cohn and his daughter is pending. They have denied wrongdoing.

"Sonny Cohn and Cohmad were not privy to Madoff's arrangements with Sonja Kohn and were unaware of the extent of their relationship since, as the trustee acknowledges, Madoff kept it a secret," said Steven Paradise, a lawyer for Mr. Cohn and Cohmad.

Separately, Mr. Picard said on Friday that on Friday that he had settlements totaling $80 million with a number of a number of charities and nonprofit organizations, resolving claims related to their withdrawals from Mr. Madoff's scheme.

Bernard Madoff was found dead early Saturday

NEW YORK — The older son of infamous Ponzi scheme architect Bernard Madoff was found dead early Saturday, after he apparently hanged himself on the second anniversary of the multi-billion dollar scam that victimized thousands of celebrities, charities and average investors.

The New York City Police Department said investigators found the body of Mark Madoff, 46, in his condo in Manhattan's expensive Soho neighborhood after receiving an emergency call around 7:27 a.m.

"Mark Madoff took his own life today," said attorney Martin Flumenbaum, who has represented the apparent suicide victim and his younger brother, Andrew in the sprawling investigation of the scam. After just five hours of deliberation, a federal jury on Friday found Brian David Mitchell guilty of the 2002 kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart.

Mitchell, a homeless street preacher, was convicted on charges of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines for the purposes of illegal sex.

Smart, who was the prosecution's star witness and told the heart wrenching story of her abduction and near-daily rapes at the hands of Mitchell, smiled as the verdict was read.

The jury rejected the insanity defense offered by Mitchell's attorneys, and he now faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced on May 25th.

The verdict brings an end to a long ordeal for Smart, who was 14 years old at the time of the abduction and is now 23.

Mitchell had been declared mentally incompetent to stand trial in state court, and the case was subsequently delayed for years before federal prosecutors stepped in.

Although visibly shaken, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were not harmed as their limousine rolled through the protests in the busy West London district.

Reports said the car was set upon by as many as 20 protesters, who kicked the car and taunted the couple as they tried to proceed to an evening function.

Industrial output growth for the current fiscal that ends in March 2011 could be close to 10%, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of India's Planning Commission, said on Friday.

India's industrial output in October rose a faster-than-expected 10.8% from a year earlier, higher than the previous month's annual growth of 4.4%, government data showed on Friday.

The median forecast in a Reuters poll was for an annual rise of 8.5%.

Ahluwalia also reacted on inflation saying that India cannot relax its vigil on inflation and it still remains a matter of concern.

The wholesale price index, the most widely watched gauge of prices in India, rose 8.58% in October from a year earlier compared with 8.62% in September.

Review: Fall in love with Delhi weddings in ‘Band Baaja Baraat’

With the marriage season around the corner, the arrival of Yash Raj’s ‘Band Baaja Baraat’ couldn’t be better timed. Starring debutant actor Ranveer Singh opposite Anushka Sharma, ‘Band Baaja Baraat’ is a story of two young wedding planners from Delhi – Shruti (Anushkha) and Bittoo (Ranveer).

Written and directed by Maneesh Sharma, ‘Band Baaja Baraat’ is the story of Delhi and its ostentatious weddings. The movie captures every minute detail of Delhi’s by lanes, thereby making it come alive on the silver screen. As a launch pad of Ranveer, the film is perfect start for the actor who plays the typical Delhi boy, whose crude but good-hearted, layabout manner and foolishness in the matters of heart captures the very essence of his character. In Bittoo, we find the perfect street-smart guy who doesn’t mind speaking without gulping down his victuals.

As the film begins, we find Shruti and Bittoo making lavish plans and setting up their wedding planner company. However, as the film progresses, ‘Band Baaja Baraat’ offers many twists and turns that keep you quite surprised. Check out Anushka, who plans to give a lavish makeover to Sainik Farms weddings.

However, the second half lags in pace with over the top wedding sequences and even an item number where Shruti and Bittoo fill in for Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who can`t dance at the wedding because of a sore leg. Enjoy the endless prattle about wedding glitterati and flowers.

Final word, ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ is a great entertaining movie.

No Problem review : A one time watch

No problem, directed by Anees Bazmee has been released on Friday.

The movie has huge star cast including Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Sushmita sen, Neetu Chandra and Paresh Rawal.

Bazmee, who earlier has given brilliant comedy movies like No Entry in 2005 and Welcome in 2007, fails to woo the audience this time.

The movie misses those funny one liners, hilarious jokes and mirthful sequences, which make you laugh.

To talk about the storyline, Yash (Sanjay Dutt) and Raj (Akshaye Khanna) are small time thieves, who rob the village bank.

After robbing the bank, they run away to Durban. The bank manager Zandulal (Paresh Rawal) follows them to Durban.

In Durban, Gangster Marcus (Sunil Shetty) and his aide Sophia (Neetu Chandra) carry out a multi crore diamond robbery.

The incapable police cop, played by Anil Kapoor has been given the task to nab Marcus and Sophia.

Arjun is married to Kajal (Sushmita Sen), who has a split personality .

Pressurised by Zandulal to return the bank money, Raj and Yash robs a minister’s house in Durban as they have spent the money they acquired from the bank.

Now starts the hide and seek game between all of them as Marcus, who had also planed to rob the minister’s house reaches his residence after Yash and Raj had already robbed his house.

Furious Marcus kills the minister and start chasing Raj and Yash for the money they have robbed from minister's place.

Now begins the final and confusing chase, which should be seen in theatres. Don't worry as although the movie fails to make you laugh but will surely bring smile on your face. As we said its a one time watch.

So, watch out the movie in theatres to see the climax.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the death of fashion designer Sylvie Cachay following the discovery of her body in an exclusive New York hotel.

The 33-year-old had been staying at the SoHo House hotel in Manhattan on Thursday night, with her body discovered at 03:00.

Police officers and paramedics were called to the 29 Ninth Avenue address, with Ms Cachay declared dead at the scene.

Investigators have since apprehended her boyfriend, whom has been identified as a son of Joseph Brooks, Oscar winning songwriter of ‘You Light up My Life’.

Brooks faced his own legal troubles last year, with the 71-year-old charged with sex crimes stemming from alleged casting-couch assaults on 11 starlets.

He is still awaiting trial.

His son is presently being questioning at the Sixth Precinct station house.

Speaking to the New York Times, a law enforcement office said there “no obvious trauma” on the victim’s body.

He added there was no sign of drug paraphernalia in the room, only what appeared to be full bottles of prescription medicine.

The room was not in any visible sign of disarray.

Oprah's Connecticut Visit to Dr. William Petit

Oprah Winfrey came to Connecticut for Thursday's show, for what she called "the exclusive first interview" with Dr. William Petit about the assault and murder of his wife and two daughters in 2007.

What was exclusive about to her it may have been that she was the first big celebrity interviewer who dropped in to get his comments. But the mourning doctor's voice has certainly not gone unheard in the incessant coverage locally of the crime, trial and sentencing.

Sitting in his parents' house (rather than, say, Harpo studios in Chicago before an audience) Dr. Petit answered her questions in a muted voice as she bore down on him like a psychiatrist -- a psychiatrist bent on knowing what exactly he was feeling at every point.

Her first question: "Tell us of the moment you were conscious of the fact that you had lost your entire family."

When he doesn't immediately answer, she sets the scene like a police investigator: "You're in the hospital, your family walks in... can you tell us what that was like?"

"I think I was still dazed and confused," he began.

Later, she said, a little callously, "Describe for us what this meant for you to lose your entire family?"

What is this insistence of TV interviewers to know how somebody felt at every moment? Is this the key piece of information, the holy grail, every TV interviewer must have? Can't we simply imagine what a man who has lost his family has felt? Are interviewers, in constantly asking these questions, merely poking at raw nerves in hopes of seeing some emotional response?

As quietly as she speaks and even handed Winfrey's tone, there is still a notion of exploitation in the whole exercise. Especially as exuberant commercials keep interrupting every five minutes and the host keeps teasing the next segment -- usually with one of her blunt questions.

There has been no shortage of Dr. Petit's statements made public over the years, in his remembrance at their funerals and in his impact at the sentencing. But since he didn't speak these personal things to Oprah, maybe they haven't counted.

So she persisted in what would seem outrageous questioning. In between the tense piano music, she had a query right out of Camus: "Why did you make the decision not to kill yourself?"

He didn't want to risk not seeing his family in the afterlife, he said.

Petit himself laughed when she asked: "Where are you with God now?"

But he tried to answer: "God and I had a little bit of a standoff. I've believed in God for a long time, but I was pretty angry with Him for a long time - or Her," he added, perhaps in acknowledment of her role among a female audience.

Winfrey said later in the interview she was hesitant to even bring up the word forgiveness. But it was enough of a way to bring up the topic.

"I don't think you can forgive ultimate evil," he said. "You can forgive someone who stole your car. You can forgive someone who slaps you in the face. You can forgive someone who insulted you. You can forgive someone who caused an accident. I think forgiving the essence of evil is not appropriate."

"I love that answer," she says.

Oprah tried to end on an up note, by mentioning his foundation for education programs in science and for people affected by violence.

"Does this make you feel alive again?" she asked.

"It makes me feel that there are a lot of good people in the world who reach out," he answered.

'Don't ask, don't tell' procedural vote failsvor

A Senate procedural vote to move forward with debate on a bill ending the military's "don't ask, don't tell" law failed Thursday to earn the 60 votes necessary to proceed, delivering a significant blow to efforts to allow gays to serve openly.

Despite the setback, senators fighting to end the ban said they would introduce a separate bill to repeal it.

The bill will be cosponsored by Sens. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), who often work together on homeland security and defense issues. They said the bill will have bipartisan support.

President Obama expressed disappointment and urged senators to reconsider the National Defense Authorization Act before the end of the lame-duck session.

"Despite having the bipartisan support of a clear majority of senators, a minority of senators are standing in the way of the funding upon which our troops, veterans and military families depend," Obama said in a statement. "This annual bill has been enacted each of the past 48 years, and our armed forces deserve nothing less this year."

Senators voted 57 to 40 to advance the NDAA, which contained language ending the ban, as all Republicans except Collins held firm on a vow to block any legislation that does not address tax cuts or government spending. One Democrat, Sen. Joseph Manchin (D-W.Va.) voted against.

"We've tried every possible way to do this," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Thursday before the vote. More than a week of negotiations with Collins and Lieberman.

Throughout the first 15 minutes of the vote, Collins repeatedly broke into huddles with Lieberman and Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.), reading through legislative language on the floor, at times rolling it up into a ball and angrily waving her arms about how the process was handled. Collins voted with Democrats to proceed on the bill, though by then it was clear her vote would not effect the outcome.

Collins, Reid and Lieberman had negotiated for more than week on an agreement that would allow Republicans to introduce up to 10 amendments to the bill, with Democrats adding up to five.

Collins agreed to the amendment count Wednesday, but held firm to a request for at least four days of debate on the bill and amendments. Reid rebuffed her request, citing the need to proceed with the tax and spending measures before the Senate's planned departure next weekend.

"History will hold these senators accountable and so will many of their constituents," said Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a group pushing for repeal of the law. "There will be no place for these Senators to hide. The Senate and the president must remain in session and in Washington to find another path for repeal to get done in the lame-duck."

"Leaders of both parties let down the U.S. military and the American people," said Joe Solomonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights organization with close ties to the White House and Congressional Democrats "Instead of doing what is right, 'the world's greatest deliberative body' devolved into shameful schoolyard spats that put petty partisan politics above the needs of our women and men in uniform."

Thursday's vote saps gay-rights activists of their strongest legislative option for ending the ban; they now plan to pressure Obama to act on his own through executive action. Obama could order the Justice Department to stop appealing federal court cases challenging the constitutionality of the law or use his powers as commander-in-chief to issue a stop-loss order halting military discharges and the removal of any gay troops in violation of the ban.

Executive action by Obama is "imperative in order for him to fulfill his State of the Union promise," Solomonese said. "The only measure of success is an end to the discharges and anything less is unacceptable."

"I think the president strongly believes that one of two things is going to happen: Either Congress is going to solve this legislatively, or the courts are going to solve this," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday before the vote. "The policy is going to come to an end."

A Pentagon spokesman said the Defense Department had no immediate comment. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen support ending the ban through legislation this year, as do some of the military service chiefs. But the heads of the Army and Marine Corps last week expressed reservations about ending the ban this year as combat troops continue to face the pressures of ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The fate of the broader 2011 defense measure is also increasingly in doubt with Congress scheduled to depart next weekend. The measure, which authorized Pentagon policy and spending, has been approved for 48 consecutive years.

New York - Forty years after his conviction, Jim Morrison, the lead singer of the Doors, was posthumously pardoned Thursday for his alleged indecent exposure at a Florida concert in March 1961.

The Florida Board of Executive Clemency voted unanimously to pardon Morrison, who was still appealing the verdict when he died suddenly in Paris in 1971.

Morrison's widow, Patricia Kennealy Morrison, had opposed the pardon on the grounds that Morrison never exposed himself to the crowd as prosecutors alleged.

'Since the original charges and trial were a publicity stunt to begin with, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that the pardon should follow in those footsteps,' she told CNN. Her husband 'did nothing to be pardoned for' and his record should have been expunged, Patricia Morrison said.

'Despite the fact that there were 10,000 people in the hall that night, funny thing, no one has a picture of the actual exposure of the Lizard King's lizard,' said Morrison, using a popular nickname for the notorious rocker.

The pardon was championed by outgoing Florida Governor Charlie Crist who said the conviction should have been dismissed after Morrison's death 'so that he was again presumed innocent.'

'A pardon corrects the fact that Mr Morrison is now unable to take advantage of the presumption of innocence that is the cornerstone of the American criminal justice system,' Crist said in a statement after the vote.

The WBC is not affiliated with any known Baptist conventions or associations. The church describes itself as following Primitive Baptist and Calvinist principles, though mainstream Primitive Baptists reject the WBC and Phelps.

A South African outdoorsman is presumed dead after he was dragged from his kayak by a crocodile while leading a kayaking expedition from the source of the White Nile into Congo.
The body of 35-year-old Hendrik Coetzee, who was living in Uganda, has not been recovered. The stretch of river is notorious for its whitewater and high density of crocodiles and hippos. Two Americans tourists, who watched the incident take place, were "physically unharmed but shaken up".

Eddie Bauer, the trip's sponsor, said: "We are saddened by the tragedy and express our deepest sympathies to Hendrik's family and friends."

In his online blog, Coetzee discussed the importance of trusting instincts and the group's only rule - "nobody panic".

Today, local and federal officials burned down the Escondido, Calif., house where he had been living -- and which authorities said doubled as the country's largest bomb factory.

The single-story tract home in this upscale suburb was placed on the map Nov. 18 when a gardener stepped on a makeshift land mine that authorities believe was planted by tenant George Jakubec. The unemployed computer software consultant was arrested and bomb squad officials soon determined the home was too dangerous to disarm. It was determined that burning it down was the only option.

Among the materials found in the home was Pentaerythritol tetranitrate, or PETN, the same type of explosive used in the shoe bomber and underwear bomber cases.

Jakubec was recently indicted on eight counts of possessing destructive devices and bank robbery. So what do we know about the man? Surge Desk hunted down some answers.

1. His age and nationality

Jakubec, 54, was born in Serbia and has one sibling, a half brother from his mother's previous marriage, reported CBS 8 in San Diego.

Jakubec's mother is deceased, and sometime after her death his father moved to a home on Calle Maribel in San Marcos, Calif. After the father died in 1994, Jakubec received about $33,000 in cash from selling the property, according to CBS 8.

2. His job

Jakubec's profile on the business networking site LinkedIn listed his occupation as "Software Consultant," and ABC News described him as "an unemployed software engineer."

Well, now......here's something I never knew before, and now that I know it, I feel compelled to send it on to my more intelligent friends in the hope that they, too, will feel edified. Isn't history more fun when you know something about it?

Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as "plucking the yew" (or "pluck yew").

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew! Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentals fricative F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as "giving the bird."

1.The story began when I was a child;
I was born as a son of a poor family.
Even for eating, we often got lack of food.
Whenever the time for eating, mother often gave me her portion of rice.
While she was removing her rice into my bowl,
she would say "Eat this rice, son. I'm not hungry".
That was Mother's First Lie

2.When I was getting to grow up,
the persevering mother gave her spare time for fishing in a river near our house,
she hoped that from the fishes she got,
she could gave me a little bit nutritious food for my growth.
After fishing, she would cook the fishes to be a fresh fish soup,
which raised my appetite. While I was eating the soup,
mother would sit beside me and eat the rest meat of fish,
which was still on the bone of the fish I ate.
My heart was touched when I saw it.
I then used my chopstick and gave the other fish to her.
But she immediately refused it and said "Eat this fish, son.
I don't really like fish."
That was Mother's Second Lie.

3.Then, when I was in Junior High School,
to fund my study,
mother went to an economic enterprise to bring some used-matches boxes that would be stuck in.
It gave her some money for covering our needs.
As the winter came,
I woke up from my sleep and looked at my mother who was still awoke,
supported by a little candlelight and within her perseverance she continued
the work of sticking some used-matches box.
I said, "Mother, go to sleep, it's late,
tomorrow morning you still have to go for work.
" Mother smiled and said "Go to sleep,

That was Mother's Third Lie.

4.At the time of final term,
mother asked for a leave from her work in order to accompany me.
While the daytime was coming and the heat of the sun was starting to shine,
the strong and persevering mother
waited for me under the heat of the sun's shine for several hours.
As the bell rang, which indicated that the final exam had finished,
mother immediately welcomed me and poured me a glass of tea
that she had prepared before in a cold bottle.
The very thick tea was not as thick as my mother's love,
which was much thicker. Seeing my mother covering with perspiration,
I at once gave her my glass and asked her to drink too.
Mother said "Drink, son. I'm not thirsty!".
That was Mother's Fourth Lie.

5.After the death of my father because of illness,
my poor mother had to play her role as a single parent.
By held on her former job, she had to fund our needs alone.
Our family's life was more complicated. No days without sufferance.
Seeing our family's condition that was getting worse,
there was a nice uncle who lived near my house came to help us,
either in a big problem and a small problem.
Our other neighbors who lived next to us saw that our family's life was so unfortunate,
they often advised my mother to marry again. But mother,
who was stubborn, didn't care to their advice,
she said "I don't need love."
That was Mother's Fifth Lie.

6.After I had finished my study and then got a job,
it was the time for my old mother to retire.
But she didn't want to; she was sincere to go to the marketplace every morning,
just to sell some vegetable for fulfilling her needs.
I, who worked in the other city, often sent her some money to help her in fulfilling her needs,
but she was stubborn for not accepting the money.
She even sent the money back to me.

7.After graduated from Bachelor Degree,
I then continued my study to Master Degree.
I took the degree, which was funded by a company through a scholarship program,
from a famous University in America .
I finally worked in the company. Within a quite high salary,
I intended to take my mother to enjoy her life in America .
But my lovely mother didn't want to bother her son,
she said to me "I'm not used to."
That was Mother's Seventh Lie.

8.After entering her old age,
mother got a flank cancer and had to be hospitalized.
I, who lived in miles away and across the ocean,
directly went home to visit my dearest mother.
She lied down in weakness on her bed after having an operation.
Mother, who looked so old, was staring at me in deep yearn.
She tried to spread her smile on her face;
even it looked so stiff because of the disease she held out.
It was clear enough to see how the disease broke my mother's body,
thus she looked so weak and thin.
